Automotive Tools: Your Best buddy while you are on the road

Along with the invention of cars in the early 1900’s came the creation of automotive tools.  Besides being used to make the cars, these tools were needed to repair and keep cars and trucks in good running condition.  Today, there seems to be an almost limitless number of varied tools and devises available.  Within this whole category, most circles include the following:

Basic Automotive Tools classification

  • Air Tools
  • Diagnostic Tools & Equipment
  • Hand Tools
  • Power Tools
  • Shop Equipment
  • Shop Supplies
  • Toolboxes & Storage

This is by no means an exhaustive listing.  But it is a good starting place.  Quite a few manufacturers produce their own specialized tools to do specific work on their own designs.  However, most basic tools still manage to get the job done.

When it comes to getting the most life out of these tools that I've spent my hard-earned dollars for, there are some things I do.  Before I share that though, you should remember to take what the manufacturer says in maintenance and upkeep ahead of what I'm sharing here.   Most automotive tools nowadays are made of metal and other similar materials.  On that note, they are vulnerable to rust and deterioration.  Rusting on these tools, especially on joints and screws, can make it hard to maneuver movable parts, thus hampering you a bit during use.  I have learned that the best technique is to lubricate these tools regularly and on or in the right spots.  What I do is I place a light coating of grease on joints and screws.  I put an even lighter coat of oil on the handle and shafts to prevent rust.  Precautionary measures must be taken when applying grease, however.  Besides safety concerns of slippage, there are certain parts of hand tools that do not need greasing and may even be damaged when lubricants are applied.  So take a moment and read what the manufacturer says and do maintain your equipment.  It's very important that you keep your tools in well- designed storage boxes.  Most decent ones are made to help you avoid unnecessary visibility (think theft) and exposure.  It's critical to keep your automotive tools away from moisture as much as possible.

Additionally, if something about your tools is damaged, you'll want to replace or repair that right away.  A quick inspecting before each use is a good way to avoid accidents.  Don’t push your luck and just use them when they are not in good condition!  Doing so might just create greater damage or  make them irreparable, besides potential risk and danger to you.  Remember, it may not just create damage to you or your equipment,  it could also hurt your vehicle.

On more sophisticated tools and devices, probably the most important thing I can share is to consult the user’s manual.  Don't just wing it.  These manuals are provided to guide us, as users, in the first place.  They are not sold together with the equipment to be just thrown around or get stacked in a corner of your garage.

Right Automotive Tools will always come in handy

Working on cars and trucks is a task that requires some skill, know-how, and the right tools.  So much of our energies are spent on the procurement of our next "tool toy" that we often forget or neglect caring for these tools properly.  There's no need to obsess about it.  Just take a few minutes and learn what needs to be done to keep all your automotive tools in prime condition, then DO IT!
