Things to Know About Methacrylate Adhesives - Adhesive Systems' Custom Adhesive Products

What Are Methacrylate Adhesives?

Methacrylate adhesives, also known as structural MMA's, are toughened, impact-resistant, high performance structural adhesives designed to bond difficult-to-bind engineering plastics, composites, unprepared metals, ceramics, and dissimilar substrates for manufacturing and assembly. They can cut through oil and grease to bond, thereby requiring less surface preparation, which saves both time and money for the manufacturer.

How Do They Work?

Methacrylate adhesives are two-partacrylic adhesives. When the curing agent and resin are mixed (1:1 ratio), they react chemically to form chemical chains that bind with each other and certain surfaces, particularly plastics and metals. Unlike epoxies, thorough mixing is not as crucial for methacrylate adhesives; and once the chemical reaction initiates (through the catalyst), the rate of reaction increases to provide more rapid strength build-up.

What Are The Advantages of Methacrylate Adhesives?

Methacrylates from Adhesive Systems have a variety of advantages over other bonding agents available on the market including:

  • Moderately priced, commercial-grade and industrial-grade products
  • Good gap filling for a wide range of assembly and manufacturing applications
  • Excellent impact resistance and flexibility
  • Excellent peel and shear strengths
  • Substrate versatility, bonds multiple, dissimilar surfaces
  • Medium/fast cure at room temperatures (accelerated at higher temperatures)
  • Tolerant of dirty surfaces – little or no need to clean most surfaces
  • Good flexibility at lower temperatures

Tips for Use

Before they cure, the methacrylate adhesive emits a strong sulfur odor, so we recommend good ventilation during any application of the product. The resin and curing agent are also flammable, so keep cartridges away from heat, sparks, and open flames. Although these products contain volatile monomers, they react so quickly to polymerize as the adhesive cures, they are considered virtually VOC free. Our methacrylate adhesive glues come in convenient cartridges with a mixing nozzle for easy storage, use, and disposal.

Did You Know?

Because of the exotic plastics now used in outdoor and illuminated signs, methacrylate glue adhesives are replacing rivets and welding in most sign frames.
