Conception Of Perfection: A Mercedes Benz Tale
Only the people at Mercedes Benz, who are keen on perfection, could have come with such an idea, let alone see it through to its end. To transport a racing car to events around Europe, you build a magnificent transporter that attracts everyone's attention and is one of the fastest carriers as well. But what could possibly possess the company to invest vaults of money and countless hours in the design and construction of such a one off commercial carrier? Why did they just not use a carrier that was already there?
The tale of making the carrier has facets of dignity, passion, and common sense. Before the advent of the First World War, there was a vicious rivalry going on between Mercedes Benz and the other racing teams of Germany. But Mercedes? W-154 power-driven by the V-12 won 12 of the 17 events before the war and claimed the number one position out and out. Based on a decision by the management in 1952, Mercedes finally came back to the world of Grand Prix racing in 1954.
To trumpet its comeback, Mercedes Benz decided to build a special truck to haul its all new W 196 racer, a car that was piloted by a famous Argentine ace racer. The transporter had to be made so that it was distinctive, without any match in its class, and had to be easily acknowledged as a Mercedes Benz creation. It even had to the speediest of its type, as well as comparably fast to any other car on the free roads of Western Europe.
On being the first team to reach the tracks you gave yourself a head start in terms of preparation and practice time. This also implied that if a racer needed to be repaired, it could be sent to the plants and brought back to the racetracks well in time. Mercedes Benz created the transporter with the best of their technologies at the time. In the chassis, the X-shape of the frame reminded you of the one in the 300 S model, and the 3.0 liter, 6-cylinder engine, as well as the four speed manual transmission seemed to be reminiscent of those in the 300 SL series. Power assisted hydraulic drum brakes were fitted at all four wheels.
However, what really caught your eye about the carrier was its amazing body work. The steel panels used on it were inspired from most of the other panels of the day. The interior fixtures, the windshield, and the doors, all of them were modelled on the ones used in the 180 S. All in all, it could carry off two spare tires, ramps for loading, tools, and other necessary equipment for the racer with ease.
The single cab was kept unconventionally up front, way too much ahead of the front axle, and the cab itself was placed seemingly too low, but the look that was obtained in the end was definitely Mercedes Benz. The paint job of clean, factory blue made it more than just a short-time success. It was a truck that, despite a fully loaded weight of about 6,600 pounds, was capable of more than 100 mph, fast even by today's standards.
Hitting the roads sometime in mid-1954, the transporter was an instantaneous hit at the race tracks of Europe, and the U.S.as well. The truth was that at times, the transporter was more the topic of discussion than the racing cars it carried. When, in the 1955 French 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, a privately owned Mercedes Benz 300 SLR killed 80 people while crashing, Mercedes Benz stepped back from public racing entirely. By the autumn of that year, the entire racing division, including the transporter, was retired.
The vehicle was actually so weighty that the company even had to give up the plan of preserving it in their museum as the floors would not have been able to take its weight. After the demise of the carrier, Mercedes Benz got so many requests that it had to opt to build a replica in 1993. Using an outside fabricator and working only from a few sketches and photographs the vehicle was finally completed in 2000. A momentary and yet so grand aspect of racing history of the Mercedes Benz has been incredibly revitalized for the amazement of old and young alike.
