How to Touch up a Scratch on Your Hardwood Floor
When a scratch to a hardwood floor is not too deep, there's no need to bring in an expensive professional to fix it. By following a few simple steps, you can take care of the problem yourself. So, here are the five easy steps to use in Floor Sanding Sunshine Coast
Step 1: You need to "rough up" the area of the scratch; this will allow the new polyurethane to adhere to the wood. Now, the first question you have to answer is: what type of finish are you going to use? If it's oil-based, use a very fine steel wool (a 0000 grade is good) or very fine sandpaper. If the finish is water-based, then very fine sandpaper or grit are called for.
Step 2: Using the appropriate material, rub the scratch and area around it lightly. Important tip: always rub in the direction of the grain, if possible. If the scratch goes against the grain (across it), or you have a parquet floor, a circular motion is appropriate. Also, do not rub too hard; this is important. Remember, you're only trying to get the finish ready to be touched up; you don't want to rub clear through the finish.
Step 3: If you're going to use a water-base finish, take a cloth, dampen it with water (damp only, not very wet), and wipe the affected area. If your finish is oil-based, then mineral spirits is appropriate. Once clean, allow the area to dry completely, Floor Sanding
Step 4: When applying the finish, you want to use the "dry brush" technique, as you don't want the affected area to end up looking too dark. If that happens, you'll get a sort of "puddle look" to the spot. So, only dip the tip of the brush into the finish, wipe it off until it's practically dry, and then start to apply the finish to the scratch. Again, go with the grain, and blend the new finish into the old at the edges of the scratch. Don't worry if it looks like you don't have enough finish to cover the damage; you can always add a bit more.
Step 5: Once the new finish completely covers the scratch and it looks well-blended into the existing finish, allow it to dry completely. Usually, this will take from a couple hours to overnight. While it's drying, make sure the finish doesn't get stepped on.
