looking for ehaust manifold and exhaust for 1986 Mercury Grand Marquis.?
i got a 5.0 1986 grand marquis. I am having a hard time looking for performance exhaust manifolds and exhaust system for it. I am purchasing this stuff in the next week or so but cannot seem to find the exhaust system that i want. I am redoing the whole car and making it a show car. I know that sounds cheesy but i relly like it and would like to get some nice sounding exhaust on it. I have the intake man, ign, any other things that i should put on it. I will probably be getting some injectors and some other stuff also. I have about 3K to put into the engine right now but just want it to sound good and have some snap to it. I will be putting in a Jasper Transmission. the car Is in MINT condition but just would like it to have that growl and that speed.
another thing, does it matter what type of exhaust man i put on it. they should all bolt right on as long as i get one for a 5.0/302 right?
I LOVE the Grand Marquis! If you are looking to put headers on it, save your time and don't worry about them. You CAN put mustang 302 "shorty" headers on it, but for the expense, and such a minimal gain of anything (HP, torque..) I wouldn't say they were even worth it. Why spend 500$ to gain 1-3 HP? I looked for 6 years for headers for my Marquis and came up with that much. When you ask people they think you are crazy and either way almost everybody that sells headers doesn't know if Mustang headers will fit a Marquis. Full-length mustang headers will NOT work on a Grand Marquis, unless you are having them custom bent because the #4 and #8 pipes will hit the firewall.
My suggestion is that you chop all 4 of the catalytic converters, remove the air piping, and put a nice set of duals on it with NO mufflers...Thats right, NO mufflers, and some short chrome tips. The tone of the 302 smallblock is amazing, but if you put glass-packs on it it goes too high-pitched and whiny/crackly, and if you put mufflers on it it'll have tone, but be too quiet.
Before you bolt the Jasper tranny in, put a shift kit in it. You'll be glad you did. I put one in mine and it went from poky Grandpa car, to a 2 1/2 ton Mustang (0-60 in 6.5 seconds), mind you I did all of this AFTER the new dual exhaust. Put a K&N air filter on it, a MSD coil, and some nice looking wires and good plugs in it.
