Building A Shower Pan -- Why You Need One
If you're building a shower pan, you must know that ceramic shower floors naturally leak. See, the grout is not waterproof. What that means is that some of the water that hits that floor is going to leak down into the floor. Without something to stop the water, the area under the shower will be damaged and eventually will rot. Not good.
That's where a shower pan comes in. With a conventional shower pan, there is a waterproof membrane built into the masonry floor. That's what stops the water... the waterproof membrane. What is this membrane? Well, over the years it's been a copper sheet, lead sheet, even mopped on tar. But for the last several years, it's usually been a PVC vinyl sheet. This vinyl sheet is actually built into the masonry floor to stop the water that leaks through the shower floor.
There are a number of tricks to getting this to work. One of the basic tricks is a special drain. The special shower drain has drain holes on two levels. The one level is right up there at the top. Just what you see when you look at the floor. The other drain holes are under the surface of the floor. Huh? See, that's where the waterproof membrane routes the water that leaks through the floor. How do the drain holes stay open under the floor??? It's pea gravel...
As you probably know, there are other tricks to building a shower pan, including the special mortar that's used. It's called deck mud and it's made a certain way. There's also the special way the floor is sloped. There's a reason for a slope, which you probably could guess. But, can you guess why many tile setters don't use a sloped floor? It's weird...
Funny thing, installing a tile shower the conventional way works just great if everything is done right. Problem is, there's quite a bit of argument about the best way to do several of the construction steps. There is another way. Many professional tile setters now use a system that completely eliminates all the mud work. That way much of the "art" to building shower is gone. You get leak proof showers without all the mud.

What would cause an HVAC primary drain pan (plastic) to crack?
The secondary pan fills about 3 buckets per day as it drains. Is there any way this pan would crack due to normal wear and tear?
other answers good..i'll add...are you sure its cracked and the drain line,drain pan outlet,or drain pan itself isnt in need of cleaning?..how old is the system?..is this a horizontal [on its side] or regular upright unit...i'm thinking its horizontal because they are typically the ones with a secondary pan underneath,,although vertical units can have secondary pans too..if its horizontal does the primary drain line have a trap to stop airflow from coming back up the drain line?..if not the airflow can hold back the water from draining..sometimes this condition isnt noticed until you have an unusually hot summer and the unit runs longer than usual,,or you set the temperature back [ warmer] while on vacation or using a programmable tstat,causing a long run cycle during recovery..... otherwise the lack of a trap sometimes isnt noticed because the unit cycles off enough to allow the water to drain without overflowing.... drain line traps often clog,preventing water from draining out..another possiblility,although rare, is that one of the unused drain pan outlets [there are sometimes 2-4 total to allow installer to connect drain line from whatever side he wants] is leaking where its plugged off,,plug not tight or deteriorated....anyway,several possibilities here...dont assume the pan is cracked unless all other possibilities have been eliminated..fyi,dont ever cut a drain line with a hacksaw,,use ratchet style cutter to eliminate stress on the drain line fitting that connects to the pan,,otherwise you could break the fitting or the pan outlet...also,if the pan is metal,it could be rusted out,esp if its old.......dan
