Fall Hoist

Falls Are no Accident – They Don't "Just Happen"
Fall Injuries
Falls realize more major injuries in the construction industry than all other type of injuries . In fact, most of the severe injuries in the building trades are due to falls from one level to another.
Good protection of floor openings is 1 way of stopping these falls from happening . If you have to take off guardrails or covers to work or hoist in a shaft, put the protection back when you are done .
If you remove a section of a steel grating floor, rope off the area. These openings are especially hard to see when the floor below is also steel grating.
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION :
- Do you know of any locations on the job where floor protection is either not there or defective?
- What process do the mechanical trades follow on the job for replacing or arranging replacement of floor opening protection after they have been taken away ?
- Do you need or have a Safety Audit and Safety Plan?
REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING:
- Look where you are going . Never backup toward wall or floor openings.
- Carry all materials in such a way that you can see where you are going .
- Cover or banish all floor and wall openings.
- Always put back covers and barricades you move immediately.
- Houseclean up floors and landings, especially near openings. Never leave tools on the deck .
- Set up toeboards wherever gear might be knocked into shafts or openings.
- Fall Protection and OSHA Regulations Training is a must have for all workers on a construction job-site.
Get-going now to "fall proof" your job-site . Falls are no accident – they don't "just happen". Either there is not enough protection or the victim takes chances because he/she doesn't know safe practices or disregards them and needs training .
FALL PROOF YOURSELF AND YOUR WORKERS:
- Never back up toward roof edges, floor or wall openings, ramps or steps.
- Don't use boxes, horses or other makeshifts for ladders.
- Follow the laws . Nobody will benefit more from them than you yourself .
- Do Not ride loads, load lines, cranes, derricks or any unauthorized hoists or rigs.
- Don't take short cuts, such as sliding down ropes or poles.
- Don't rush . Wait for the ladder or elevator. Use safe access ways.
- Use your safety device equipment. Don't forget it. Never alter it.
- Take care of yourself and others. Report unsafe equipment, conditions or practices.

Need some new ideas for pulling buoys!?
I work on a very large lake in Maryland. We have over 100 buoys across the lake. Every year we go out and put the buoys in, then in the fall we take them back out. If you have never done this, it is very very hard work. I am trying to figure out a better way to get them out. Right now we basically just hook them and pull them in by hand, Do they make a winch or hoist that can help us? Maybe like the winches they use on crabbing boats. Any ideas would help..Thanks in advance
Out here on the West Coast, we use a barge rigged with a hydraulic winch on a swinging boom. When the Captain pilots the barge into place, the crew swings the boom out and hooks the buoy by the lift loop on the top. A second crew member controls the hydraulic winch as the workers move the buoy onto the main work deck of the barge. They attach a special "Marker" float to the cable or chain that is anchored into the bottom substrate. Usually we never remove them from the area, but we do a replacement or repairs and then reset the Buoy. I'm sure that there's something out there similar to what we have out here. Hydraulic winches are better and more reliable than an electric winch, especially in the marine environment.
