Farm Jack

Are you Breastfeeding? Welcome to the Farm!
I just got off the phone with my sister-in-law, a brand new mom as of December 20, and floods of early breastfeeding memories came flooding back.
Oh how I don't miss the early bf days. My sister-in-law is having issues with this, as many women do. For such a "natural" thing, it sure is hard. I mean, don't we women go through enough with periods and labour as it is? Then we're told that breast is best but it's yet another difficult hurdle to get through.
Breastfeeding, for me, was hell. I mean it. Not only was I in great pain from my third degree tears and hemorrhoids (I pushed out a 9.4 pound baby!) but now my nipples were feeling like they were getting rubbed with sand paper every 30 minutes. Oh my poor nipples. They blistered and bled so bad I would find blood in my son's diaper. He was ingesting my blood and peeing it out!
Thankfully, the crap that was breastfeeding slowly got easier. What made it easier was a combination of lanolin and a special cream from Dr. Jack Newman called all purpose nipple ointment. It's easy to get, just ask your doctor to write out a prescription (may just be an Ontario thing). Now I can nurse little b all day and won't feel a thing. Some days I feel like a cow.
From a semi breastfeeding vet, I've compiled a list of tips that helped me. And I'm sure will help you too:
- introduce the breast to your baby as soon as he/she is born (i.e. in the delivery room right after the cord is cut!). Babies are born with a natural sucking reflex…in fact they can find your nipple on their own if you let them. Get this instinct to kick in as early as possible so it's easier for them to latch on.
- Visit a lactation consultant. They're there for a purpose – use them. I enlisted the help of anyone I could to help me. From the pediatrician to the lactation consultant to my friend who had gone through it.
- Be sure baby has a proper latch. Don't leave the hospital until your baby is latching on. If you've already left, that's what you should ask the lactation about…without a proper latch you'll get abused nipples and your baby won't get enough milk..making you want to just give up before you have even begun!
- Get the proper latch by tickling your baby's chin or bottom lip to coax her to open her mouth. Then insert the nipple into her mouth. Be sure the nipple is directly in the mouth and not rubbing against the roof of her mouth. It may hurt at first but shouldn't hurt once baby starts sucking.
- Nurse on demand…this may mean up to 12 feedings a day. The reason for this is to increase your milk supply and of course keep your baby content!
- If it hurts, don't keep on going. Unhook the latch (by placing your finger in the corner of baby's mouth) and try again.
- Try different positions. There is the cradle position (laying baby across your lap), the football hold (baby's body is laid to your left or right side), or lying down.
