What are the basics of using a paint sprayer (HVLP)?
My wife gave me an Apollo A7500QC HVLP spray gun and I need a "beginners guide" to using it the first time. I have an adequate compressor and hoses. I want to paint 300' of molding (pre-primed MDF) and I have a gallon of Valspar Ultra (purchased at Lowes) water-base interior latex paint.
I realize that it's probably a bit difficult to describe how to setup and use this spray gun but would appreciate a few pointers.

Latex is water based so it is not recommended on MDF. You should use an oil base. Also, latex doesn't spray as well through the HVLP.
Spraying is difficult so you are going to need some practice before painting your molding but here it goes.
HVLP stands for High Volume Low Pressure. Different guns are designed to run at different pressures so check your instructions to see your range.
The paint should be thinned to the consistency of milk. Water for latex (not recommended) or paint thinner (purchased at your paint store) for oil.
Make sure you are using a small tip. This will limit the amount of paint that is going to come out of the gun. Normally one would use a medium tip for this job buy better to go small since you are a beginner. It will take you more time to complete the job but you will limit the damage from any mistakes.
Set the pressure in the middle of the recommended range for your gun. Start spraying into a box that you plan to throw away and adjust the pressure up or down so you have a nice, soft, and even fan. If your pressure is too low, you won't have an even fan. If it is too high, it will be atomized too fine and the paint will bounce back off the material. Go with the minimum pressure that gets you a nice even fan.
Start spraying the molding at one end and work slowly towards the other, laying down an even coat. Keep a "wet edge running", which means avoid going back over the areas you have already sprayed. Avoid applying too much paint or it will run, slump and fill in the deep parts of the molding profile. You just need the minimum to cover. If your paint is too thin, lacks sufficient solids (cheap paint), or the color is really dark, you may need more than one coat. Don't push it; it is much easier to apply a second coat than to fix drips.
Set the finished molding somewhere clean and warm, out of the wind. Let it dry for at least one hour (latex) or 24 hours (oil). If the paint coat hasn't completely covered, you may need another coat. You don't need to sand or buff between coats.
Clean up with water for latex or paint thinner for oil. If you use water, be sure to dry the gun completely so you don't get rust. Run the water/oil through the gun as if it were paint until the spray is completely clear. In the case of water, empty the reservoir and run some air through just to clear the internal passageways.
