Patch a torn leather sofa

The surface of pure leather is soft. The soft surface of leather can scrape, rupture or wrinkle long with time or due to some mishap. If you have a leather sofa you will indeed go through the painful experience of seeing your leather sofa torn at a certain point of time.

Special kits are required to maintain those tears on leather sofas. Learning how to patch a torn leather sofa is something that is utmost essential. Initially, it's important to clean the area around the tear by rubbing alcohol. If any worn leather is visible around the tear, trim it with the help of scalpel. The repair kit contains canvas cloth which can be inserted behind the tear of leather using tweezers.

Leather Sofa

Using small pointed object to repair the leather sofa, leather glue can be applied in the middle of the leather and the canvas cloth. Q-pointed object would be more favorable to apply on it rather than the pointed one. Successively, press and apply a thin layer of heavy filler provided in the repair kit with the Q- tip object.

The filler should be dry before applying in the torn area. Make a thick layer while applying it. The layer should be about 3 to 4 inches and at the end level the layer around the areas of the leather with the help of palette knife. Then, to beautify or emboss it, press a grain pad on the outline against the filler to form a grain pattern.

Later, when the filler is fully dried, 2 -3 coats of touch-up paint is required on the leather, using a sponge. Mix the color with the touch paint in order to apply in the surrounding area. Let the touch-up paint dry for a while.

Finally, to fasten the exterior, leather finish should be added to protect it. Similarly, 1,200- grit sandpaper can be used to polish over the area to give a shining and smooth finish. Now that you have learnt the procedure to patch a torn leather sofa you will never have to worry about finding the right person to do the job.

Maybe you could have a hardware store or lumber yard order you some black silicone/latex caulk. Or you could look at some black cold tar type stuff. It's made for patching leaks in roofs like on an R.V. or a flat commercial building. I'd try looking at tire/inner tube repair kits first. An auto supply store will carry a kit made for patching/repairing vinyl upholstery and you can mix dye to make it any color you want. I think that might actually be your best bet if it's elastic enough.
