Free Standing Toilet Roll Holder in the UK | Simply the Best

My wife asked me to do some DIY a couple of weeks ago. I'm pretty handy at it, but no professional. Anyway, she wanted me to put up a new toilet roll holder she'd just bought.

When I took it out of the box I saw that all I needed to do was drill two holes into the bathroom wall and "Bob's Your Uncle". Little did I realise…

I unscrewed the old toilet roll holder and crossed my fingers that the screw holes uncovered would be exactly the right distance for me to use for the new toilet roll holder. I offered the new holder to the wall and, guess what? That's right – not a chance! The old holes were not going to help me at all.

Ah well, I took out my electric drill, found the drill bit that the instructions said I needed and prepared for action. The packaging even had a template drawn on it showing exactly where the holes should be, so I offered that up to the wall and pressed through the template with my pencil. And there were my marks. A quick push into the wall with my bradawl and I was ready to drill.

I tapped the wall with my knuckle and deduced that it wasn't brick. I switched my drill off hammer action, and started drilling. The drill went through the wall suspiciously quickly, like a hot knife through butter. Fortunately I wasn't pressing too hard, or the whole drill might have gone through. In fact what I was drilling two holes into was that scourge of DIYers – plasterboard!

When I finished making the two holes, I pushed the rawlplugs in which were supplied with the toilet roll holder. They seemed to fit snugly enough. I offered up the holder, pushed one screw through it into the rawlplug and started screwing with my driver. Shortly after this I experienced that dreadful moment which all DIYers hate. I screwed the screw in, and in, and in – it wasn't going to tighten - ever!

Damn! I thought I might as well try the other screw hole. You never know. But really I did know, as it too failed to tighten.

At this point I realised I was going to have to use those cavity wall rawlplug devices where spring loaded wings flicked out once they were inside the hole. Of course I didn't have any of the right size in my toolbox, so a trip to B&Q was required. When I got there and eventually found the aisle I needed I was presented with a myriad of ways to affix items to cavity walls. Doubt began to set in. Was I going for the right thing for the job?

Just as I was contemplating what to do, my eyes drifted off to the bathroom displays. And there, looking majestic, proud - and easy - was my solution.

So I bought the beautiful free standing toilet roll holder and a small tube of pre-prepared filler. Job done!

The only downside is that I should have come home empty handed from B&Q, and then looked in CaraselleDirect's UK eBay Shop. They have a range of free standing toilet roll holders that are reasonably priced, and they give free P&P. Click Here.

If the bottom of a christmas tree is split, will it die fast?

My husband had to trim the bottom of the trunk and we have the stand that has the rod that goes up the center of the trunk, so he took his drill, drilled it out, and then had to hammer the stand on. Now, the trunk is split and I don't know whether to decorate it or send him out for another tree!

just as long as both ends are wet you will be fine
