Please expain the phenomenon of rolling with slipping and rolling wihout slipping (rotational mechanics)?
I've read up quite a lot on this issue in books like Resnick Halliday and H.C Verma,and even certain websites,but there are certain areas that I just don't get--Like,how friction assists to prevent slipping,whether the friction in this case is static friction or rolling friction,when there is slipping what exactly is happening to the wheel,whether we can determine any details of the motion when there is slipping,etc.

When rolling happens without slipping, the point of contact has zero linear velocity relative to the ground. When rolling with slipping happens, the point of contact with the ground has a non-zero linear velocity relative to the ground.
At the point of contact with the ground, the case of rolling without slipping is like pushing on a block where the block is not slipping because friction is able to overcome the applied force: so static friction hold the point of contact in place.
If the rolling is with slipping, and there is a point of contact with the ground, then the situation at the point of contact with the ground is analogous to the case of pushing on a block where the block is sliding despite the presence of friction: so dynamic friction is providing the retarding force. (The force of friction always tries to return the system to the rolling without slipping condition.)
You can tell when slipping is happening because the linear velocity of the body must always equal the rate of rotation of the body multiplied by the radius from the center of rotation to the point of contact. In this particular situation, the magnitude of the linear velocity at the edge of the rotating body is guaranteed to equal the magnitude of the linear velocity of the center of rotation. If this not the case, then there must be slipping at the point of contact: because either the center of rotation/mass of the body must be moving faster than the spinning motion of the rotation can move it (like when you slam on the brakes and the car starts to skid), or because the rotation is more rapid than the forward velocity of the body itself (like applying too much gas and spinning-out a car tire.)
