Guide to the Ashes 2010 - Adelaide Oval Cricket Ground
The Adelaide Oval is regarded as one of the most picturesque grounds in the world. Opened in 1871 it has St Peter's Cathedral, a French Gothic building similar to Notre Dame, as a back drop. The stands include the Chappell Stand, which celebrates the achievements of the brothers Ian, Greg and Trevor and the nearest gates to the stand are named after the trio's grandfather, Vic Richardson, who was also an Australian Test player. The scoreboard is another striking feature. It was designed by the architect Kenneth Milne and started work in 1911. The Oval has staged many sports, including Australian Rules, rugby league and hosted two games in the 2003 Rugby Union World Cup, including Australia's 142-0 win over Namibia, but it is for cricket that it is best known.
It staged its first Test in 1884 when England beat their hosts by five wickets and it was at the centre of the Bodyline storm on the infamous tour by Douglas Jardine's men in 1932-33. At Adelaide, Australia's Bill Woodfull and Bert Oldfield were hit by balls from Harold Larwood and mounted police had to be used to keep the angry crowd, of over 50,000, under control. In 1999 the Sri Lankan Muttiah Muralitharan was no-balled for throwing by umpire Ross Emerson in a one-day game against England. The Sri Lankans threatened to abandon the game but eventually played on after the Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga had made his feelings known to Emerson.
In less controversial circumstances the late David Hookes hit a 34-ball century on the ground when playing for South Australia against Victoria in 1982 and Brian Lara surpassed Allan Border's aggregate of runs to become Test cricket's leading scorer, on his way to 226 in 2005. The ground was subject to a major redevelopment that started in March 2009.
