I need a 36mm socket for the CV joint Nut. I bought a (1 7/16) socket..?
I bought a (1 7/16 inch) socket to remove a 36mm nut from the CV joint...since Im removing the cv boot. What should I use in inches? The 1 3/8 inch socket didnt fit in, yet the one I bought (1 7/16 inch) feels kinda loose...but it fits...

1 3/8 = 34.925 mm
1 7/16= 36.51 mm
The make special sockets just for those things and they usually only come in metric since 98% of FWD cars came out after the USA started using some metric stuff on cars. You can buy them individual or in sets. They are made for an impact wrench (black) so they wont shatter. Those things are tight and if you live somewhere with rust its even worse. You need a good impact wrench to get those things loose. If you try to do it without one you will need a good supply of ratchets with a lifetime free replacement warranty, a long pipe, and a friend to drive you back to the store to get a new one when you break it. Parts stores and rental places usually rent the sockets along with impact wrenches. Be sure to look at what else you will need. Often times you have to take the brakes partially apart and un hook what ever holds the top of the knuckle on which could be a ball joint or the strut. Also check to see what holds the other end to the transmission, sometimes they bolt on, sometimes they just snap in, other times there are special tools to release them.
