Uses of OBD Readers
OBD Readers are used to find the amount of emission from the engine of the vehicle. OBD refers to On-Board Diagnostics. At initial stage it is used for checking emission amount only. But later on, improvement in technology has made the OBD readers to get the real time data from the engine. They have to be just plugged in, so that they will get connected to the computer of the vehicle. Then they will send data that can be used to do the complete diagnostics of the status of the engine.
The vehicles that came before 1996 used OBD 1 readers. These readers have codes and definition that differ from one manufacture to another. Now the vehicles are using OBD 2 readers. These readers have standard codes and definitions. Most of the OBD 1 reader vehicles are not compatible with OBD 2 readers.
OBD reader came as a boon to the vehicle owners and also the mechanics. Since it provides the real time data about the engine, the mechanic can use this data to fix the problem accurately. The time taken to find the problem and its solution will also get reduced drastically. This avoids looking into the parts that are not related to the problem. The OBD readers can be connected to the computer. This will give the detailed report of the engine such as temperature of the engine, pressure of oil, tachometer, speed. So with that the user can diagnose the problem. Unless it is a serious problem, the user can solve it himself without going to the mechanic. This will save the user large amount of money.
OBD readers will return the data in the form of codes. These DTC – Diagnostic Trouble Codes will be in the form of alpha numeric. They can be interrupted with the help of code dictionaries to find the problem. Problems related to the throttle sensor, oxygen sensor, temperature sensor can be diagnosed by OBD reader and it will send signal. Before replacement of any part the data should be analyzed carefully with the help of computer. Because sometimes the OBD readers will send signal due to some bad sensor problems.
OBD scanners are more versatile when compared with OBD readers. The reason is that the OBD scanners will give the codes and also the describing statements of the codes. But OBD readers will give only the codes that the user has to match with the list of codes available to find the description of the problem. OBD scanners are available as hand held devices.
The OBD readers are most probably suitable for all models of vehicles. But there are some cases which need the specific version of OBD reader. So while buying the readers do not miss to find whether it suits your vehicle model. OBD readers are available in price that are affordable to the users. Once bought and fit into the vehicle, it will help to reduce the amount spent with the mechanic for small problems each time.

Where is the OBD-II connector on a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier? Why can't they put it in a place that would be obvious to find. It's not near the fuse panel or in the fuse panel, either under the hood or in the driver side one. I have no idea where they put it and it'd be nice if GM would put it in a place that didn't require super vision or a Professor X's telepathic abilites to find.

obd II connectors by law all have to be located within a certian distance to the steering wheel I cant remember what it is but it is only a couple feet, usually all GM's locate it right under the drivers side dash usually slightly to the left of the steering wheel and they are usually pretty visible if you just glance under the dash
