What Exactly is Automotive Paint Made Of?
At Ditchek and Sons Auto Body Supply we use the PPG Variant Deck System as well as the NEXA Autocolor Color Box System as a couple of our methods for matching automotive color. We are proud to say that we give top of the line service to all our customers and because of this, we have been able to grow our business over the past 62 years. We thought we'd take some time to let you in a little on the whole process behind auto body paint and the color matching system. We thought we'd start by talking about what ingredients are in automotive paint.
There are three basic ingredients in automotive paint:
1. Resin
2. Pigment
3. Solvent
The resin holds together the pigment in suspension, provides adhesion to the surface applied, and determines the quality and paint durability.
The pigment comes in a powder form similar to concrete. The average aftermarket automotive paint mixing system includes about 100 colors or toners to be able to mix formulas including metallic and pearl paint colors.
Lastly, the solvent provides the transferability. The solvent is needed to thin the paint's viscosity in order to transfer from container to container.

vehicle painted, clear coat looks like 'dew'?
I painted my vehicle, 3 coats, base, 3 coats pearl, and 2 clear coats.
after every step, the paint looked like glass, with the exception of the clear coat. The clearcoat looks like tiny droplets, such as morning dew looks like.
Can I buff this out? Or do I need to sand and reclear coat it?
If buffing works, please explain what to use, and how.
I used an hvlp off of a compressor, with 38-40psi in, and about 16-18psi out.
the clear coat was PPG Shop-line JC661, hi-gloss Multi-panel clear, mixed 2 parts clear to 1 part medium topcoat hardner.
The temperature was starting to drop shortly after I painted, and I may not have been able to keep it warm enough in the booth.

what grit do you recommend for the wetsanding, and how "deep" should I sand?

from what you describe it sounds like you put the clear on "DRY" what that means is either your hand speed was too fast or the gun setting was wrong. The clear wasn't laid down heavy enough so it forms the "dew" look you have. It is nearly impossible to cut and buff. Your best bet is to wet sand the clear and reclear.
