what is the weight of a 2in cube of a plastic that has a specific gravity of 1.7?
This is a question for one of my classes. I would really like to know how to do the problem.
You would have to use the specific gravity weight conversion chart to get started. This is available online in a few places.
I will use a real world example to solve the problem:
G-10 Plastic has a specific gravity of 1.7
Using the chart, you would find the 2" thick sheet value, which is 10.368.
With this value, you multiply the Specific Gravity by the value given to receive the weight of lbs per square foot.
This equals 17.626. So, a 2" x 12" x 12" piece is 17.626 lbs.
Now, you would divide that number by how many 2" x 2" squares you can get out of it, which is 36.
(144 square inches is 1 square foot, your piece of 2" x 2" is 4 square inches, thus 144/4 = 36)
So 17.626lbs divided by 36 = .49lbs
So a piece of G-10 plastic with a specific gravity of 1.7 and a size that is 2" x 2" x 2" (a cube) is .49 lbs.
