How To Measure Mil Spec Rivets
There are a great number of fastening technologies that are used in military and aerospace applications. Rivets in particular secure parts and structures all over an airplane, and many military structures and vehicles also make extensive use of rivets. Of course, these applications can be demanding, considering what they are expected to achieve or accomplish. Therefore, only Mil Spec Rivets, rivets that meet the highest standards are used. With such a wide range of sizes and lengths that they come in, finding the right Mil Spec Rivets for the job can be a challenge, but an important one since the right size and fit is required to make sure that it fastens permanently. If the rivets are too small they will not hold properly and will also be prone to letting more liquid through, while larger rivets can damage the holes, making them unusable even in case the rivet is replaced with the proper size.
Before you just go out and buy rivets by the bulk, make sure that you are getting the ones that are the right size for your application. Mil Spec Rivets can easily be identified through their part number. For example if you are presented with a rivet with the part number MS20470 AD 4-7, the "4" is multiplied by 1/32 and indicates the diameter, while the "7" is multiplied with 16 to get the length of it. If for some reason you forget how to read the part number, you can simply measure it using an old fashioned ruler. Do not use a metric ruler though, as the length of most aircraft rivets are indicated by every 16ths of an inch. For mount and universal rivets, they can be measured from the very top to the bottom to achieve an accurate reading. Blind rivets on the other hand are very difficult since they are only as effective as their grip length. The overall length of a blind rivet may be long, however, it is the grip length that indicates how thick the material should be before the gripping surface actually becomes ineffective. They are still identified by the same kind of part number with the last two numbers giving an indication of both diameter and length. However, the last length is not to be taken as an indication of overall length, but of effective length only.
Other fastening technologies that one can still commonly see today are MS retaining rings, or circlips as they are otherwise known. They are utilized to fasten or just retain the pinned connections and are installed through the use of retaining pliers. Ordinary pliers are actually quite similar; however it is important to note that the tips in retaining ring pliers are made to fit into specific dimensions.

How do you remove the differential circlips on a mk II clio?
I am working on a 1998 mk II renault clio, i found out that the speedo does not work so i removed the speed sensor from the gearbox and turned it by hand and it worked, so i now know its the drivegear in the gearbox/differential. I drained the fluid and removed the left hand driveshaft i found out to get to the gear i have to remove the circlip holding in the tripod joint cup but there are no surfaces for circlip pliers it seems solid and there are two small cuts about half way through the circlip a cm apart in a rectangle cut out, how do i remove it?
i doubt if your get an answer to that on here shaun, get a haynes manual for the car, it should explain in there how to remove it,good luck
