Obedience Training For Jack Russell Pups
Imagine having a trained dog who will never misbehave and do anything you tell him. However, Jack Russell puppies are boisterous bundles of energy with little to no regard for common courtesies. Because of their energetic nature, Jack Russell puppies need to begin training as early as possible in order to become competent and obedient companions.
A Simple Approach To Jack Russell Puppy Training
Luckily, training your new puppy needn't be that difficult. They're incredibly intelligent animals and can learn new things very quickly, and if you train them properly you'll soon be left with a pup that's perfectly well-behaved. The challenge is more about when to begin and how.
The most important piece of advice going is to start them young. Do this as early as possible, when your puppy first arrives, as you don't want any bad habits to develop and become irreversible. Set a consistent and firm tone early on, discouraging any misbehaving, and showing him who is the dominate force of the house. You are.
Don't forget that socialization is a critical part of the process and must be offered daily so that your dog becomes comfortable around other people and pets at an early age. Don't take it personally if your Jack Russell likes to run off, as this tendency is a matter of genetics. He was traditionally bred to run ahead of the hunting party to catch the prey, and even today he's likely to give chase to anything that moves. This inclination to run ahead, together with natural athleticism, can compel your dog to run far away from you, making him likely to get lost and not find his way back to you.
Protecting your dog from running away
The best way to prevent your Jack from running away is by offering proper training. Your dog needs to master basic commands as well as respect you as head of the household - two achievable goals that will keep your dog in check provided you have patience and some insight into your dog's psychology.Such training is utterly essential. Also, try not to chase your Jack if he begins to run away from you. If you chase him it seems to your dog that you're playing some kind of game, compelling your dog to run more, so tell your dog that you aren't playing by staying put. In fact, you won't need to run after him if you don't let him run. Until he's been properly trained never let him off the leash when you take him out for a walk, otherwise you could have a lost dog on your hands.Another important point is that owners cannot punish their Jacks after they run off. If you reprimand him when he comes back (or once you've caught him) it's like you're punishing him for returning, and that's never going to help stop your Jack Russell running away. Instead, focus on teaching him commands and asserting your place in the pack, and hopefully he'll start to get the idea that running away isn't acceptable.
Due to the breeding and temperament of the Jack Russell, owners are likely to encounter at least one run off now and again. Even with their endless energy and tendency to chase, remember that these dogs can be trained to be responsive, obedient, and most importantly, safe.
