How powerful motor would i need to winch a 60kg weight 20 meters vertically?
For part of my physics homework, I have to work out what power an electric motor would need to be to winch a 60kg roller coaster cart up 20 metres of vertical track. i understand that whatever angle my track is at the same "work" will be done and therefore i would need the same power from my engine if it was at a 20 degree slope compared to a 80 degree slope.
Power is the rate of using energy or doing work. Whatever motor you use will have to do 11,760 Joules of work to get the roller coaster up the incline. The point is, though, that a 1MW motor could do that in .01176 seconds, while a 1W motor would take over three and a quarter hours to do the same thing. To know the necessary power, you'll have to specify the time you want it to take. Longer time means a lower power needed.
