Do It Yourself Auto Repair, Case Study # 1
This is my first in a series of case studies for the many "Do It Your Self" (or DIY), repair of people out there. Furthermore, it is good information for intermediate and junior technical automotive !
Po 'first car in history. We begin with the call to Jim DIY. Jim was literally taken from the hair. Had to get his vehicle, there were the emission test to obtain a current inspection sticker. He lent me a friend "Mini-ScanTool and got the code p0171, left bank lean. Meaning the left bank of the O2 sensor had "seen" a constant state of Lean and triggered a code determined by PCM and turn off the check engine light.
Jim is "Web-savvy," he went online and did homework. All of the recommendations pointed to the left bank of the O2 sensor ("left" is the operative word!). He went to his local supplier and bought the sensor. Jim replaced the O2 sensor, cleared the code and had his wife drive the vehiclefew days. was activated about 75 miles later, the Check Engine Light, and was the same code.
Jim is back online and dug deeper. It was suggested that a possible cause of the blank lines may have been broken and has had losses, Which had failed in this condition of thin and / or the lower intake gasket. These are problems common to this type of engine. He also states that some "friends mechanic," he reviewed. (I'll Comment on this later)
Then Jim went all out!First, he took to replace the difficult task is done, the lower intake gasket. Luck was not in his favor and in the process, taking two pinch bolt hole threads.
After re-drilling and tapping the screw holes, got the lower intake gasket and upper plenum gaskets replaced. Jim has also replaced every vacuum line! Has removed the code and then had his wife drive the car for a few days. At that time, according to him, nailed "the problem.
Once again the evil Check EngineThe light came on about 75 miles. Now you can imagine the frustration level of Jim today. Got my business card from his local supplier and he gave me a call. When I arrived on site, his wife gave me the story of Jim is written and a list of what I wanted to check (he is a meticulous type!). Needless to say, I immediately got my Scan tool (I use a Genysis OTC) and the note that the O2 sensor 1 / 1 (Bank was left) "fixed thin. I also noticed a fuel trim is on the left bank "exhausted" and cold startthe minimum was very low.
Then I switched off the engine, remove the vacuum hoses and found that the "left" of the O2 sensor installed a factory original part. I restarted the vehicle is connected to check my lab scope and condition of the O2 sensor. (But I must say that I knew which side of the engine was "was left and which side" right ").
I think you will see the "moral of this story. Poor Jim had the wrong O2 sensor replaced, had received "bad advice and online" MechanicsFriends "(as was found out, really as handyman and technicians with very little experience!). He was led to believe that the" left bank was in reference to the "driver" side of the vehicle, when in fact the "left" The page was really in relation to when you were standing in front of the vehicle in front of the motor mount. (Simplified)
Lessons learned: (I love this part, because if we all learn something new every day …….. We are all much better!)
First I willthis over and over and over again … Back to Basics! Yes, these new cars can be complicated when the problems are to engine power, and start with the basics then means "go ahead": Check which side of the engine is!
According to I told you, Back to Basics? (I'll stop now!)
Third Test is the key to successful diagnosis! And to know what is equally important for the test. Lets review, Jim had a scan tool, the basic codes are shown to monitor the status and limited flow of data.A single test was: pull the electrical connection at the prospect of O2 and O2 was indeed the cause. Suspected O2 was thin, O2 has been separated in the middle zone, read 0.4 -. 5 VAC. 2k rpm or engine rpm (in park!) And "View" O2 "switch" to lean rich.
Jim had the fourth-yourself manual for the vehicle and a circuit diagram. A simple test (not permanently) to the test with a digital multimeter, the voltage sensor O2 suspected (less than 0.40 is slim vac, vac more 0.40 is rich.This may have pointed in the right direction!
(Although I do not recommend if you can find your way through a circuit diagram!)
Fifth no "hangs" on the recommendations of others! Get some professional advice! Hey, this is the "New Millennium" and there are many places to give you free advice.
Jim spent a lot of money unnecessarily and lost a few gray hairs in this process. But hopefully she will never forget this lesson and learn from it.I kept testing procedures in much broader sense, so please do not take as the Gospel truth. I recommend finding information on the trial components in the user manual or OEM first DIY. If the person seeking advice is to ensure a certified engineer, trained ASE or OEM Factory.

How to make a format CD to repair my windows xp in case it gets bad?
I just fixed my pc for $30 and all the guy did is format it. I want to make my own format CD , so I can repair it by my own. Can anybody tell me how? for windows xp
He didn't just format it, he formatted it while he was reinstalling Windows (which was probably the wrong thing to do). You need a Windows installation CD. You can buy one from the computer manufacturer for $10-$25 (depending on who made your computer). Then read http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm so you can do it the right way if you have to.
BTW, $30 is cheap for a Windows reinstallation. You found an honest man.
