Repairing rotted wood
Many people have minor wood rot on window sills, door frames, etc. and are want to know an easy way to repair it enough to get a few more years out of it without replacing the doors or windows. This will explain an easy way to economically repair minor wood rot with very little in the way of tools.
To repair the rotted wood you will want a product that is inexpensive,easy to use, doesn't take a lot of time or tools to do it, is able to be painted, and is easily shaped. The product is auto body filler. Because the areas we are repairing are cosmetic and not structural auto body filler meets all of our needs.
To repair wood rot lets say on a window sill, (or where ever the wood rot is) you need to remove all loose pieces of the rotted wood. You don't want to get to aggressive and cause any more damage than you already have. Use a wire brush to remove most of the rotted wood, for harder to reach areas you may want to use a die grinder bit fastened into an electric drill. Once you have removed the loose rotted wood you are ready to begin the repair process. Mix the auto body filler and hardener together as directed by the instructions on the can. Body filler hardens by chemical reaction which begins as soon as you mix the filler and hardener together so you don't have a lot of time before the body filler starts to harden so only mix up what you need at a time. Because when mixed the filler is semi liquid for large areas it is better to use several coats than gob on a whole bunch at once and have it dripping and running. Apply the filler with a metal scraper and roughly shape it as you apply it. If it is a deep spot you are fixing a few finishing nail pounded in until they are just below the finished surface will give you better bite. Once you have enough filler to fill in most of the void left by removing the rotted wood it is time to start shaping.
Using 60 or 80 grit sand paper with a wooden block you start shaping the filler to match the shape of the wood. You will want the filler reasonably hard to sand with 80 grit so it doesn't gum up too much but you don't want it rock hard either or it will take a lot of elbow grease to get it sanded down. Any low spots will require a little more filler. Once you have the desired shape you will need to smooth it out by sanding with 180 grit sand paper.For this you will want to wait until it is completely hard or the 180 grit sand paper will clog up. Now you should have the desired shape and all that may remain to repair are a few deep scratches from the 80 grit sand paper. A skim coat of filler and a little more sanding with the fine sand paper and you are ready for paint. This is a very easy way to repair wood rot to get a little more time out of it with out too much effort.

Is metal to metal or body filler better to repair hole?
I have a hole in the rocker panel metal the size of a nickle. I was going to buy body filler to repair it but I noticed something called metal to metal filler. For a hole like this am I better off using metal to metal or body filler?
The best way to repair a hole is to weld a new piece of metal in behind it.
If you are going to try to fill it, go with the metal to metal. It is simply aluminum reinforced body filler and it is more waterproof than regular body filler. Regular body filler is made to be used over solid metal. If there are any holes behind it, it will draw moisture and bubble. Regular body filler over a hole will last a couple of months at the most. The metal to metal will sand a little harder than regular filler, but other than that it will be the same to use as regular filler.
