Skoda's new offering
Volkswagen's Vento challenged the supremacy of market leader Honda City. Media reports are now suggesting that Volkswagen-owned Skoda is all set come up with a sedan based on Vento's platform. According to media reports Skoda Rapid is likely to name the new car Rapid and a Diwali launch is on the cards this year. However, the Rapid will not have all the features present in the Vento and might retail at a price below the Vento. The car will have to fend of some strong competitors in the market. Here is a low-down on some of the competitors:Volkswagen Vento – The car comes in both petrol and diesel engine powered by a 1.6 liter DOHC in-line type engine. It is mated with a 5 Speed Manual and 6 speed automatic gearbox with triptronic (in the petrol version) for easy shifting of gears. The engine is capable of producing power of 105 bhp at 5250 rpm and torque of 153 Nm at 3800 rpm for the petrol engine and 250 Nm at 1500-2500 rpm for the diesel engine. It is priced at Rs 7,02,883 - Rs 9,28,631 (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Fiat Linea – the company launched the new Fiat Linea T jet last year. It gave the car the much needed power under the hood to take it zooming past competition. The car has an all-new 1400cc turbocharged petrol motor capable of producing 113bhp. The car revs happily in the 2000 to 6000rpm range but the rev happiness goes down as the needle goes towards the red line. The new Fiat Linea T Jet has larger 16inch wheels, wider 205 tyres and rear disc brakes. The car has a good ground clearance of 170mm, which is a must for Indian roads. The suspension is good and absorbs most of the shocks, which is vital when driving on most Indian roads. Honda City – Honda City has been a segment leader in the sedan segment and is available in three variants out of which two variants – Honda City 1.5 E MT and Honda City 1.5 S MT are powered by a 1.5L, 1497cc, i-VTEC petrol engine with the 5-speed manual transmission gearbox capable of producing 118PS power at 6600rpm and 14.9Kg-m torque at 4600rpm. The other variant – Honda City 1.5 S AT has the same engine but comes with an automatic transmission gearbox. It is priced at Rs 8,15,000 - Rs 10,25,000 (ex-showroom, New Delhi). Recently, the carmakers recalled over 57,000 units of the car in the country. Maruti SX4 – The SX4 diesel is powered by a 90bhp Multijet diesel unit that does duty in the Fiat Linea. The SX4 does the 0 to 100 kmph sprint in 13.8 seconds and easily touches a top speed of 165kph. Reaching the 5200rpm redline is no cause of worry for the rev-happy engine assisted by an improved gearshift. The engine refining is also impressive. The car would give you a mileage of about 13.2kpl in the city and 17.1kpl on the highway. The car is priced between RS7.44 – 8.62 lakh (ex-showroom, New Delhi). The car's petrol version is powered by a 1.6 litre, 16 Valve, DOHC, VVT engine that generates max power of 104.68 PS at 5600 rpm and belts out a peak torque of 145 Nm at 4100 rpm. It is mated to a five speed manual gearbox and four speed automatic transmission. The car gives a mileage of 11.6 kmpl in the city and 15.6 kmpl on highways. It is priced at Rs 6,92,006 - Rs 8,67,360 (ex-showroom, New Delhi).

deisel has 300 psi compression- gas has 110 psi(approx).-more compression=more torque
