What You Need to Make Jewelry

What you need to make jewelry depends on the type of jewelry you plan to make.  This may sound silly because you may be thinking that you need what all jewelers need, but this is not the case.  Most jewelers have a specialty, or an area of expertise.  Some focus on fabrication which is creating metal pieces without soldering.  Fabrication relies heavily on using different riveting techniques to hold pieces together and fabricators require certain tools that metalsmiths whose focus is on casting do not.  The list describing what different metalsmith's needs are could go on and on, but this article is about what you need to make jewelry.

Assuming you are a beginner and may want to focus more on beaded jewelry rather than jewelry that requires an entire studio set-up, the advice will stem from that.  To begin your home jewelry making adventure a few basic tools will be necessary.  First you should consider finding an area in your home that is well-lit with a medium to large flat working surface that will not be disrupted by children or pets.  Next you will need a few small piers.  Most craft and bead stores will carry a set of 3-5 pliers and these kits will include all the pliers an amateur jewelry maker will require.  If you get eye strain easily a loupe would also be a good investment.  Then there are the basic findings such as earring loops, hoops and posts; necklace chains and clasps; beads and beading wire; wire cutters and a container for organizing all of your supplies.  Other jewelry making items may be desired such as jeweler's epoxy (good for adhering pearls to earring posts) and a polishing cloth for shining sterling silver and other metals that oxidize.

Aside from physical tools you need to make jewelry, as a beginner you should also keep either a reference book of jewelry techniques handy, or have a few informative websites bookmarked in case you need to recall how to make certain items.  Jewelry making becomes second nature after numerous repeated motions, but until you reach that point it is good to have manuals on which to rely.
