how do i change the prop shaft seals on a 1971 Evinrude 60hp?
My seal in the prop shaft is leaking oil and i need to replace it before this weekend. Any tricks---I have plenty of tools-auto mechanic tackling a new task
These are the toughest seals on the lower unit, so if you haven't already, first make sure it's leaking from the propshaft. It's not uncommon to have unburned engine oil dripping from the exhaust, and it's easy to mistake it for old gear oil. Of course if you found water in the oil when you drained it, that's a pretty good clue. If you pressure tested the gearcase and ruled out the shift rod & driveshaft seals, then I guess you have no choice.
I highly recommend *not* tackling this without a service manual in hand. Seloc ain't bad, but the factory manual is best.
There's bound to be some sublties I've forgotten about, but I'll try to hit the high points.
I've heard rumors that somebody invented a tool for removing those seals without pulling the bearing carrier, but I've never seen it. Until I do, I'm not taking a chance on scoring the propshaft right there where the seals ride.
Use a long socket extension to reach through the bearing carrier webbing and remove the four 5/16" hex bolts. Those bolts have rubber o-rings that must be replaced upon reinstallation. Use a flywheel puller to pull the carrier out. Some of the carriers have threaded holes (sorry, don't know the size) that accept bolts, the others you need a puller with arms that hook on to the web.
It's an interference fit, so you might have to heat the outside of the gearcase with a torch to get it out. Careful not to overcook it.
There's two seals back to back in the top of the carrier, pry the old ones out. Coat the outside diameters of the new seals with hi-vis oil, and the flat sides with grease. Press the first one in flat side up, the second flat side down. Doesn't require much force.
Cover the propshaft splines with a plastic bag or something to avoid damaging the seals.
Use fine emory cloth to buff out any discoloration you find on the propshaft.
To reinstall, insert a couple long 1/4" all-thread rods through the bolt holes in the carrier, and screw 'em into the retainer plate on opposite sides to guide the carrier straight back into position while you press it in. Should be less troublesome than a trailer hub race. Use OMC gasket sealer (or some kind of anti seize) on all the fastners.
