Different Types Of Implant Supported/retained Dentures
Are you considering dental implants? If so, you have a lot of options to choose from.
The implant-supported or implant-retained denture is an over denture attached to and supported by the implants. This kind of denture is attached to implants, while regular dentures rest on top of the gums and have a tendency to fit less safely in the mouth.
The implant-retained denture is an over denture that is used if the patient does not have teeth in the jaw, yet has sufficient bone for implant support. These dentures have special attachment that snaps onto the accessory on the implants.
These implant-supported dentures are usually made for lower jaw since regular denture tends to fit less firmly in that area. The regular denture is commonly made to fit in an upper jaw, and may be stable on its own with no additional support needed by implants. Patients can also receive an implant-retained denture on either upper or lower jaw.
Patients with implant-retained dentures can remove these dentures easily. Some prefer to have it permanently fixed along with their bridgework and crown in their mouths that is non-removable. Dentists, such as the Westchester implant dentist, will consider your particular necessity and preferences when advising a potential removable or fixed denture application.
There are two commonly used types of implant-supported/retained dentures, namely:
1. Bar-retained dentures
The bar-retained dentures are implants that need at least two implants. A slim metal bar that goes along the curve of the jaw is attached with 2 to 5 implants that have been placed in the jawbone. Clips or other kinds of attachments are then fitted to the denture, the bar, or to both. The denture will then fit over the bar, and will be securely clipped in position by these attachments.
2. Ball-retained dentures (Stud-attachment dentures)
Each of the implants that have been snugly placed in the jawbone clings to a metal attachment that firmly fixes into the attachment on the denture. In the usual course of events, the attachments that are placed with the implants are ball-shaped (also called male attachments), and they are affixed into the sockets (also called female attachments) on the dentures. These attachments are usually reversed, with the dentures holding the male attachment and the implants holding the female attachments.
The dentures are typically made of acrylic base that typically looks like real gums. Acrylic or porcelain teeth that look exactly like natural teeth are attached to the base. The implants are commonly placed in the jaw, at the front of the mouth since there is usually more bone in front than the back jaw. This is commonly true even if some tooth has been missing for quite some time. Once a person loses a tooth, he/she usually begins to lose bone in the area as well. Another thing is the front jaw doesn't have that much nerves or other structure that would interfere in the placement of these implants.

Window Crank Handle Install?
Ok, here's the deal. I had to remove the driver's interior door panel on my '97 Mercury Tracer, which requires removing the manual window crank handle. I have a removal tool and it was really easy to get off. BUT, once I was ready to reinstall the handle, I couldn't get the stupid thing back on. There is the plastic window crank, a plastic washer thing that goes between the window crank and the door panel, and then an infuriating little metal retaining clip that secures the handle onto the window crank rod. After an hour of frustration and getting hit in the face by the retaining clip popping out of my pliers, I gave up. I was only able to get the retaining clip halfway on. The handle seemed to be secured on the rod, but the clip was still sticking partway out and that really bugged me. Is there some special tool or trick for reinstalling the retaining clip into the crank handle and getting it all back onto the rod it snaps on to? HELP!
Randy_ishere nailed it. You install the clip on the handle, then press it onto the shaft, and give it a quick pop with your palm. You DON'T try to install the clip with the handle on the door! That's like trying to thread a needle with the spool end first, not the open end. If you look at the end of the shaft on the door, you'll notice the end is tapered, it forces the clip open so it will slide on, then lock in the groove behind it.
