Can I drill out the baffles on a Shadow Ace Tourer?
I just got a 1998 Honda Shadow Ace Tourer 1100. I like the bike but it is to quiet. Can I drill out the baffles? Can anyone can give me the steps to do this without messing up the bike. What kind of drill bits do I need? Any info will help. Thanks
Baffle drilling... Can you? Sure. Should you? That is is whole different question. The baffles in pipes are not there just for sound deadening, their other purpose is to provide some back pressure for the engine, and prevent drawing unburned fuel out the exhaust.
Nearly all bikes have some aftermarket pipes available, which you can purchase with various "volume" exhaust notes. If you are not careful though, putting something like drag pipes on a bike that is set up for baffled pipes will cause the engine to run lean, as you will be "sucking" good fuel out of the cylinder when it is supposed to be filling the cylinder.
An inexpensive alternative, might be to remove the baffle, see how it is designed, then modify it to improve flow, with removing all obstructions. (Some are necessary to maintain back-pressure). Making small modifications at a time will allow you to "tune" the exhaust note somewhat, while maintaining performance. Note: in some states this will be an "illegal" modification, and will result in the potential seizure of the bike...(Noise ordinances/smog requirements)
On my bike, (with drag pipes) I simply bent the baffle "tangs" inward, allowing more exhaust to flow through the baffle, while still having enough back-pressure to run correctly.
