Considerations when Choosing a Disc Brake System
Parts of the disk brake
The Rotor is the disk part of the disk brake. They come in numerous patterns and are normally around 1mm thick. The diameter of this part will vary depending on the bike as well as your discipline. The next part of the system is the caliper. This is the part of the disk brake that contains the brake pads. It could be located either on the front or rear of the frame. For the bike, this system functions when the pads located inside the calipers get pushed on the disk component. This creates friction and if effective, it will slow down the bike to a halt. You can even choose either mechanical or hydraulic depending on the kind of bike that you have.
Fitting into your bike
The disc brake system is a fairly new kind of system more prominent in modern, newly manufactured bikes. Therefore, it is impossible to say if this will fit in to particular bikes, specially the older models. Another thing to consider is that these pieces are more or less not popular in mass produced bikes. If you are contemplating on installing this piece to your bike, you need to consider the frame as well as the wheel. There should be 2 slots on the frame where the calipers will be placed. The frames can also fit the disk securely. If you do not know what fits for your bike, ask an expert so that you can identify the diameter and pattern that you need. The wheels need to have the same holes where the disk will be fitted.
It is new, but is it better?
In some ways, the disc brake system is better than a conventional braking system. If you have a heavy bike, the brake has more power to stop the bike. It is also a lot easier to control the brake so if you press hard on the brakes, it will offer more breaking power. The disc brake system will not be affected by buckled wheels. It is also very durable so if the rain poured down while you are driving, you will still gain more control and it will minimize the chances of getting into an accident. When it comes to the pricing, these tend to be a lot more expensive. Another issue is on compatibility. It should fit the frame and wheel in order to be used.
Choosing the right disc brake system can help you in preventing accidents. Choose the one that fits your bike the best. Most bike manufacturers offer particular styles for the bike models so choose those ones so that you know that it will offer the protection you needed when you install it.

How do adjust the brake pads on hydraulic disc brakes?
I have 2006 Hayes Nine XC disc brakes but I dont know how to adjust the brake pads to fit the caliper into the rotor. Help!
Your Hayes brakes are self adjusting, if someone has pulled the lever whilst there was nothing between the pads then they will have closed together (pumped out), don't use a metal lever as this will damage the pads, hayes recommend in their manual that you wedge thin pieces of card or plastic between the pads to generate enough gap to pull the pads out (the pads will not close up again when you remove the card), then use a screwdriver to push the pistons back into their bores [being careful not to bend the pad mounting post].
Alternatively, if you simply mean that the pads don't align correctly so as to fit the rotor between them, then the caliper's bolt holes are oblong shape, simply loosen the bolts holding the caliper to the mount/adapter, the caliper should move freely side to side, then squeeze the lever (with the brake caliper in place over the rotor) and tighten the bolts whilst still squeezing the lever, this should align the caliper evenly but sometimes it don't! In which case you'll have to lign up the caliper by hand.
