How To Mount Your Window Treatment Hardware In The Exact Location
After deciding on the style of your treatment, don't go directly to taking the measurements; mount your pole or rod first. Mark a certain point where you plan to set up your mounting board when you intend to create an outside-mount shade project. It will be easier if you have your hardware in place. You have an exact center point and measuring devices at hand.
For projects like draping swags, a pole or rod needs to be in place to check on the style of the treatment as well as getting the entire wrap-up and feel of draping the fabric well. To estimate the whole appearance of your project, mount your pole or rod and put a silky fabric type over it. It needs to support the air conditioner, obviously, and also cover the several feet of open air above the unit.
The few I have installed in horizontal sliding windows required custom fitting a header in the open window and filling in the space above with a filler board. For filler and header, I used 1/2" plywood and glued styrofoam insulation to the inside. It wasn't pretty.

Do insulate whatever you use for a filler. It might not be pretty, but it will be cooler and cheaper.
And, if you are on the first floor, secure this installation so that a casual thief can't push the AC in and gain access. This happened to a friend of mine.
