Salmon farms in Chile uses 5000 times more antibiotics than Norwegian Salmon farms
Salmon farms in Chile uses 5000 times more antibiotics than Norwegian Salmon farms.
Norwegian Fish farms uses enormous amounts of antibiotics, but in Chile they use 5000 times more than in Norway. This is according to WWF a dangerous trend, and is afraid of resistance to antibiotics and environmental consequences.
A new research report from Marine Harvest informs about the amount of antibiotics used in Chile. Marine Harvest is owned by a Norwegian investor called John Fredriksen.
The amount of antibiotics is 5000 times higher than used in Norway.
WWF comments that it is alarming numbers, as in Norway it is used 0.07 grams of antibiotics pr one ton of salmon produced, in Chile it is used 560 grams pr ton salmon produced.
Harm to the salmon and environment can be enormous given the amounts we talk about here tells WWF.
WWF has asked for this type of information long time ago from the fish farms as they have pointed out that high amount of antibiotics use can lead to resistance and harm and give side effects in the salmon.
The spread to wild salmon can also be a problem when antibiotics are used in fish farms as the food used in fish farm sink to the bottom of the sea and creates an environmental time bomb.
Most salmon from Chile ends up on the dishes in USA and Asia.
WWF comments further that remnants of antibiotics in the fish can be a problem for the consumer of this product as well.
Marine Harvest says in a statement that they admit it can be an issue with the use of antibiotics for the fish as it is not deemed to be the optimal solution.
Chile has a very intensive fish farm activity and the farms are lying very close to each others in a very restricted area.
The authorities have had little or no control with the industry in Chile and this has lead to lots of diseases amongst the fish there. The answer from the industry has been to pour antibiotics into the farms as one did in Norway in the 1980’s.
Today the fish farm industry in Chile has almost collapsed and it is uncertain to say when any changes may occur.
The industry claims that the challenge is to make all parties in the industry to make changes simultaneously as the farms are lying close ot each others, and affect each others business.
Last year Marine Harvest started using vaccine and cut down on the use of antibiotics with 200 grams pr ton fish.
WWF admires Marine Harvest for this initiative and openness regarding this issue and deem this would be a way for the Norwegian Fish Farm industry to take a lead role in a global fish farm problem.
