Is it possible to measure horsepower (or torque) WITHOUT a dynomometer?
I'm just wondering, because I have a project going among me and some friends just for the heck of it, we are building a small one cylinder engine powered by pressure (steam or compressed air) to start with before we move onto larger engines. I'm just wondering if there is an easy way to measure it's HP or torque without a dynomometer.
Not easily. You can fit strain gauges to a shaft etc to measure the torque with a given load and calculate the power from the torque and RPM. The strain gauges can be calibrated at rest with a tension wrench in some cases. Unfortunately they are on a rotating shaft, so there are electrical problems.
The dynamometer is basically a generator and a load bank. You measure the electrical energy in the output for that load in Watts. The generator is usually better than 90% efficient so this is close to a direct measurement. For a small engine (up to a few hundred watts) a car alternator may suit. It needs the RPM stepped up to a suitable range where it works properly. There are then unknown losses in the gearing or belt drive.
In theory you could use a heat method, where the engine output is converted to heat by a brake or paddle wheels in water or some sort of pump. The heat rise per unit time is used with the specific heat of the material involved to calculate the power or energy (power over time). This method needs a lot of care and understanding to get good results.
You can use the output to lift a weight using a winch or rope around the shaft etc. Thus one pound lifted 550 feet in one second against gravity is one horsepower. This can be used with any weight and time and distance. The formula in metric units is:
Power_W = (Mass_kg x Gravity_m/s/s x Height_m) / time_s
Where Gravity is 9.8m/s/s.
