measuring the volume of air spaces in sand? Am i an idiot?
does anybody know how to find the volume of the air spaces in the sand with a graduated cylinder? I know it has to do with filling the cylinder wiht water then out the sand. Then you observe the difference in water level, water displacement. How do i find find the volume of teh sand and water, sand alone measured by cylinder, and teh volume of airspace, and fraction of airspace in sand. Please help me. Thank you, ill appreciate any answers.
fyi guys, this is high school science, i did this experiment in a lab but i dotn get it. i asked my teacher but i still dont get it.
I was only "pretty good" at science, so I hope I'm on the right track...
Do you start with one cylinder of sand and one cylinder of water?
If so, let's say both cylinders are filled to the 20 cc mark.
Pour water from the water cylinder into the cylinder with the sand, but ONLY UNTIL the water touches the top of the sand.
Now, how much water is left in your water cylinder?
For example, let's say you now have 15 cc of water in the water cylinder.
You originally had 20 cc, subtract 15 cc, so you now have 5 cc.
Therefore, I would think that there are 5 cc of airspace in the sand, meaning that the sand is really only 15 cc in volume, even though it APPEARS to go up to the 20 cc line.
So, now you have to actually do the experiment to find out what the real numbers are, and replace them in the description above.
