Bat Rolling Machines: What You Need To Know Before You Spend $400
I did not want to place my bat rolling company's name to just any kind of bat rolling machines. So I did extensive study on bat rollers, the mechanics of bat rollers, and all companies and their feedback. This was about a 5 month process. I was surprised to learn some of the information I received.
The thing that sticks out the most was that the earliest builders of these bat rolling machines, used a softer plastic. And now companies have come out with different types of plastics which are harder and last longer.
When I did my study I also concentrated on the mechanics of the bat rolling machines, ultimately which one was the easiest to use and made to last. I know other bat rollers in my town that roll in parking lots, so I got to look at some of these other machines first hand. The oddest bat rolling machine I saw was the one where you need to use wrenches to compress the rollers, what a problem. Top bat rolling machine manufacturers also said they had experimented with different size rollers and the 6 inch performed best on the sweetspot. When bat companies declare the entire barrel is the sweetspot they are twisting the truth. When you open up a bat and look inside bats have a 9 inch sweetspot at the max. What that means is there is less composite wrapping located towards the taper and end cap. The taper area is actually a layering of composite creating a joint in which the resin needs to stay intact. If the resin breaks up in this area the bat is susceptible to breaks. The end cap area has a significantly less amount of composite because an area needs to be milled out for the end cap placement. If a roller bigger than 6 inches is used it puts too much pressure on the end cap area and taper area reducing the longevity of the bat or even cracking it.
Durability was a huge deal for me because I had two bat rolling machines break. I had the bearings wear out around 200 bats rolled and I had the actual roller separate from the bar on the other after 300 bats. I was high and dry with 2 broken bat rolling machines, neither bat rolling machine person (I will not call them a company) would fix or replace my bat rolling machine. So then I bought a parallel roller but it had the softer plastic and 500 bats later the roller had a wave in it and the roller was starting to drag. I contacted the company and after a 3 week process I had new rollers and they did something to fix the drag (Panther machines actually have upgraded rollers and bearings, where this issue will be a problem of the past).
I talked to a few bat rolling machine companies before deciding and Panther Machines had the most going for them. As far as customer service, they offer a lifetime guarantee on their machines (A guarantee speaks volumes)! They are extremely confident in the modifications and upgrades to their new bat rollers. This spoke volumes when making an educated choice. And about Panther Machine's vision; after talking with them I knew they were committed to this business and making top quality bat rolling machines. The others I talked to were flighty and when I asked about a guarantee and they were not equipped for that type of commitment.
There are only 5 other bat rolling machine companies with a website (I say that because you can purchase a backyard roller from eBay made in Joe's garage) that sell bat rollers, out of those 5, only 2 sell a parallel rollers. With the new upgrades of new roller material, precision lathed rollers, thrust bearings, and radial bearings these bat rolling machines will not be rivaled on the open market. Not to mention the Panther Extreme "Green" Machine with the Duo core rollers, what a awesome idea!
This was a no brainer as far as my deciding to go with Panther bat rolling machines. Panther has a superior constructed machine and a commitment towards the future of bat rolling as well as their company's longevity. 4 of 6 top bat rolling companies use Panther machines. There are 11 bat rolling companies on the Internet and 9 of those companies use Panther bat rolling machines. EBay is no different with the majority rolling with Panther bat rolling machines. With out a doubt, they have created the #1 Bat Rolling Machines on the market. Anyone who is telling you different is pushing propaganda and not selling the world's finest bat rolling machines, you can quote me on that!
